What does community in racquet sports mean to you?

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about community—what it truly means to me and what it means within the racquet sports industry.

Community isn’t just membership or programming. It’s not logos or leagues.
Community is people and those we work with daily.

It’s what happens when individuals from different backgrounds across location, gender, age, culture, ability, identity and lived experience feel welcomed, respected and valued. That diversity of thought shapes how we learn, lead, solve problems and grow the industry together.

Supporting strong racquet sport communities goes far beyond what happens on court. Thriving communities are built when we:
• Create welcoming entry points for new players
• Lead with inclusion and intentional access
• Build relationships, on and off the court
• Offer flexible, fun formats that meet people where they are
• Empower coaches, volunteers, and local leaders
• Communicate clearly and consistently
• Celebrate stories and not just results
• Listen, adapt, and grow together

Organizations like Women Coaching Racquet Sports and the Racquet Sports Professionals Association remind us that community is action, not intention. Through initiatives like the RSPA’s DEI Community Task Forces recognizing and celebrating voices across Black History Month, Women’s History, Autism Acceptance, LGBTQ+, Hispanic & Native American Heritage and more we see how intentional community building strengthens our entire industry.

When people feel seen, supported and connected, they don’t just stay in the game. They help grow it.

Community isn’t a byproduct of success. It’s the foundation.
